SHORT READING SAMPLE ("The Lost Memories,"):
In the early, foggy morning hours of Berlin, which has transformed into a dystopian metropolis with menacingly high skyscrapers and flickering neon lights in the near future, Elara, a woman on a desperate mission, roams the streets. Her search focuses on her most precious memory – the image of her family, locked in a unique, phantasmagorical capsule that was stolen from her. In this new Berlin, where memories in such capsules are worth more than gold, Elara's mission is not only personal but also dangerous.
Elara's past as a former researcher in the field of memory technology gives her search a bitter irony. She participated in the development of the very capsules that now enclose her own memories. Plagued by the loss of her own past, she begins to question the moral implications of this technology and her role in a society that places remembering above all else.
The capsules – small, shiny cylinders that store memories as bubbles of time and feeling – are at the heart of trade in Berlin. Advanced technology extracts thoughts and experiences directly from the human brain to preserve them in these containers. The rich and powerful trade these memories, while the poor are forced to sell their most valuable moments for a piece of bread. This practice raises profound ethical questions and reflects the class division in this new Berlin.
As Elara moves through the alleys, past shops that offer such capsules, memory thieves lurk in the shadows, ready to steal the memories of the unsuspecting. Her search becomes an odyssey through the depths of a city where reality and illusion blur.
Berlin comes to life at night, a sparkling wonderland of stolen and sold memories. Elara navigates through this dangerous world, marked by the paradox that the most intimate moments of a person become commodities. Her journey is not just a physical one but also an emotional and moral one, where she confronts the dark sides of her own invention and the consequences for society.
Elara enters a bar that seems to float in the twilight between reality and fiction. The room is filled with the whispers of past conversations and the flickering of memory-laden capsules displayed in showcases. Here, she meets a mysterious stranger who introduces himself as Janos. He is a former colleague who once admired her in the highest circles of memory research. But now, he is a memory smuggler, a master of illusions, operating in the shadows of Berlin.
Janos offers Elara his help, but she knows that in this world, nothing is free. He challenges her to look into her own past and sacrifice a memory to save her family. In an inner monologue, Elara wrestles with this decision. She remembers the happy days with her family, now only existing in a capsule, and the bitter irony that she was the one who created these capsules. Elara's doubts reflect the moral tornness of a society that sacrifices its humanity in the name of progress.
The exchange with Janos leads Elara into the depths of Berlin's underground. She crosses dark alleys, past dubious figures hiding in the shadows. The atmosphere is permeated with mistrust and danger. Elara realizes that in this world, every step brings her closer to the abyss of her own soul...more coming soon.....
